Parád
Parád is a large village in Heves County. Thanks to its medicinal waters and the unique natural attractions and springs of the Mátra Mountains, it is a popular resort and excursion destination.
History
Parád was first mentioned in 1506, when the name of the settlement was written as Parad in a document. Parád was owned by several renowned Hungarian families. In the 17th century, the area came into the possession of the Rákóczi family for almost a century. This proved to be an important period in the history of the settlement, as Ferenc Rákóczi II, one of the owners of the settlement, established a glassworks in Parádóhuta at that time, which later moved to the neighboring Parádsasvár. The Grassalkovich, Orczy and Károlyi families also played an important role in the development of the glassworks into a factory. The fate of Parád was closely linked to the development of the baths, mainly for the bottling of bath glasses and csevice. Glassmaking is still practiced in Parád and the surrounding area, mainly in the aforementioned Parádsasvár, which is now independent, but the glass factory there, which was known throughout Europe, was completely dismantled after the change of regime.
Sights
– Erzsébet Hotel: built in 1893 based on the plans of Miklós Ybl, constructed by Henrik Koch.
– Freskó Restaurant: the 250-seat restaurant was opened in the spring of 1937, with paintings by Jenő Haranghy on the walls.
Sights
– Ilona Valley Nature Trail, waterfall, lookout tower: The nature trail along the Ilona Stream showcases the geological treasures of the Eastern Mátra and the remains of former ore mining on a 6.5 km long hiking trail.
– Johák Asztalos folk woodcarving exhibition: Part of his legacy was purchased by the local government of Parád in 2006, and the exhibition can be seen in the former fire station building.
– Country House: The exhibition was put together in 2000 by the Parád Retirement Club in honor of the millennium and shows the preserved Palóc clothing and way of life in the village.
– Palóc House: Built in the 1770s, this house is the last remaining example of traditional wooden construction in the Mátra region. The layout of the house gives an insight into the life of a large Palóc family. The two or three generations of the extended family not only lived in the house, but also used the stable and barn for sleeping.
– Carriage Museum and Cifra Stable: It was György Károlyi’s dream to build a luxurious stable to match the spa castle. The wooden-beamed, red-brick building with its ornate exterior was not given the name Cifra (ornate) by chance. The first part of the exhibition, which opened in 1971, provides an insight into the history of world-famous Hungarian carriage making, from the invention of the wheel to the crafts of wheelwright, locksmith and blacksmith. In addition to the original 19th- and 20th-century carriages and coaches, the most beautiful pieces in the exhibition are the ceremonial carriages of the Parliament and Esztergom. In the Cifra stable, you can also learn about nine Hungarian horse breeds.
